Robert Parker, Jr., Wine Advocate: Rated as
An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. "A blend of 50/50 Syrah and Grenache (the latter from 52-year old vines) the 2006 Renegade has a crisp nose of mulberry, white pepper and tertiary notes that unfold from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a sappy, fresh entry: bright red-berried fruit, vibrant acidity. However I would like just a little more complexity towards the finish. Drink 2012-2016." Aug 2011
The Ken Forrester "portfolio represent(s) everything that can be achieved in South Africa: cleanly made, expressive wines at unbeatable prices. If you have never tried South African wine before, then I cannot think of a better place to start than here."
Winery: "This elegant Rhône blend (our 10th vintage) displays Old World Style with New World fruit. Hint of Grenache’s earthy rusticity and Shiraz’s noble spice with hints of nutmeg and salty black olive on the finish. Balanced with soft integrated tannins."
Wired For Wine: When we're thinking about grilling (if the rain would let up for 5 minutes), this phenomenal value, Ken Forrester's Renegade red blend comes to mind... Load up your glasses and get right to it with a platter of single-cut simple smoked baby back ribs. This party is casual, and will get messy. The medium body and earthy notes in this Syrah/Grenache blend will frame the ribs beautifully and create great anticipation for the next course. This Rhône-style blend is perfect with grilled meats, roasts, hearty Mediterranean fare and lots more. An easy choice is salt-and-pepper grilled rib-eyes with your favorite sides. The soft tannins of the Renegade will really shine with this dish. A bit more labor-intensive is grilled kibbe-style meatballs. You can do them plain, or stuff grilled pitas with them, pickled red onions, some veggies and a garlicky tahini sauce - your call. A little less meaty is marinated, grilled chicken thighs topped with a green and black olive tapenade. Earthy and rustic, just like the wine... Open another bottle and divvy it up when you bring out a smooth-flavored Italian Pecorino Sardo. What's not to like winelovers??
